Anatomic Pathology: General Info
Anatomic pathology is a division of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Martha Jefferson Hospital. It is located on the ground floor of the Cardwell Center and includes the disciplines of Cytology, Surgical Pathology, Histology, Immunohistochemistry, Flow Cytometry, Cytogenetics and Autopsy Pathology.
Every effort is made to provide the physician with a diagnosis in a timely fashion. Therefore your cooperation in delivering specimens with the appropriate Consultation Request (Surgical/Cytology or Gynecologic), complete with pertinent history, demographics, ICD-9 code, and pre-op/post-op diagnosis, will expedite the process.
The hours of the Anatomic Pathology department are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. On call services are available 24/7.

Specimen Requirements:
- Specimens must be in a leakproof container with appropriate biohazard and/or formalin warning labels.
- Specimens should be labeled, bagged and accompanied by a completed Consultation Request (Surgical/Cytology or Gynecologic) as appropriate.
- Deliver specimens to Anatomic Pathology. On weekends, holidays, and after 5:00 pm weekdays, place specimens in the walk-in refrigerator in the main lab. Pathology and Cytology specimens go in the blue transport bag marked Histology Specimens.
