Our Pathologists' Assistant, Histotechnologist, or Pathologist do a gross examination on the specimens which can include observing and measuring color, size, texture, margins (if there is a mass identified, margin is the distance from the edge of the specimen) , and any other characteristics.  The specimen is sliced into sections and put into small containers (cassettes) that are labeled with the unique case number.  These cassettes allow the formalin fixative to reach the tissue and fix the tissue.
